Vacations Can Be Like That....

Okay…I’m ready for this year to be over and done with! I ended up in the hospital twice this year, struggled with writer’s block but still managed to get a story published, and now…to top it all off, I go on vacation only to get a horrid case of bronchitis while in New York. While in the city, I spent a total of 3 days feeling fine then started feeling like crap. But before I succumbed to getting sick....

We saw “In the Heights” which was FANTASTIC! I loved it so much we bought the soundtrack. We then saw “To Be or Not To Be” which everyone in our company liked but me. I thought it sucked and could hardly wait for it to be over. I saw a review in a newspaper the following day giving it 2-1/2 stars….I rest my case J We then saw “Boeing, Boeing” and it was HILARIOUS! I loved it!

By Thursday, I was ready to fall over from being sick but hung in there due to peer pressure from one of my g/f’s sisters. She said “We don’t LIKE people who can’t keep up with us INCLUDING those who are sick.” Geezus…wonder who THAT comment was directed to??? Those New Yorkers….they have such a black sense of humor...hahaha (scowls and hisses). I kept my mouth shut and did not let one smartass retort escape from these lips just to keep the peace. Even now I’m behaving wonderfully by not writing or dwelling on the other catty behavior exhibited, which can happen when 4 women are cooped up in a hotel room together. To top it off, I was PMSing but hey…all went well for the most part and I'm still alive despite choking on the the 2nd hand smoke coming from all the smokers on every street corner.

Sunday, we left the city and I have to say I was glad to leave because NYC is not a good place to be when you can’t walk around plus there’s just so many things you want to do and see and if you can’t get out and do them you feel like you’re missing something. At least I did. So finally it came time to leave the big city and we rode a train up to upstate New York, Saratoga Springs, where the pace is SLOW. I ended up sitting next to a woman who was also sick. Together we coughed and sniffled our way on the 2 hr train ride.

Once in Saratoga, I was able to rest, well almost…We went to an art museum in Massachusetts but then the rest of the time I was able to attempt to recuperate. I ended up having to see a doc because the first round of antibiotics I took weren’t working so I ended having to take a different kind plus had to get an xray to make sure that I didn’t have pneumonia. Thank goodness the results showed my lungs were okay! Yay! All was good…’cept that the other pills the doc prescribed kept me up at night with insomnia…which I guess wasn’t too bad because while I was on my computer, I ended up having a short IM chat at 1 a.m. with Mr. Fairy Butch who has a Q&A column in Curve magazine. I whined about having writer’s block and with my whining probably cured any case of insomnia she might have had lol. I also chatted with a sweet young woman who said she was an old soul…something that I am very familiar with and seem to keep encountering in online conversations. We had a nice chat about “life” in general. I finally bowed out of the conversation and tried to get some sleep. Hours later I ended up crawling out of bed at 11am, something I NEVER do. It doesn’t matter how late I stay up; I always wake up around 7am regardless of how much sleep I get but since I’m sick, I guess my body just needed the rest.

All was not lost on this trip because I did get to see a couple of good shows and felt inspired enough to write a couple of stories while there, even though as I type this I still have the horrid cough, have a stuffy nose, and my ears are plugged up.

I felt a tinge of inspiration during the few hours I spent in the Bowery while in NYC. We went to the Museum of Contemporary Art and I didn’t really enjoy the exhibits there so I focused more on the environment close by once we left the museum. I guess the Bowery area is in the midst of being fixed up but is still a bit seedy. While walking around; we visited a gallery in the area that had some art that was wildly politically incorrect and edgy. That combined with visiting the Goth fashion exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology and seeing beautiful Gothic outfits inspired me to start a Goth type erotica story. I’m having fun writing it and am very excited about how it will turn out.
