What lurks in the mind of this writer.....

After spending a few days in Manhattan last month, my mind is fresh with new ideas and inspiration to either finish some older stories I’ve put aside or start some new ones. I’m really good at starting them but not finishing them. My flash drive is filled with unfinished stories. It’s not such a bad thing though because sometimes when I get bored, I browse through the titles, find one that I’ve forgotten about, read it, and then get excited all over again. It’s like finding money in your pocket when you take your jeans out of the dryer a week before payday. It’s THAT kind of exciting. Ok, weird analogy, but I’m sure you know what I mean.

Oh speaking of flash drives... you know, I accidentally left the one with ALL of my stories in it, in my jeans pocket. I put said jeans into the washer, set it for a long wash cycle, and then put them into the dryer for yet another long cycle. When I pulled my jeans out of the dryer and discovered the flash drive in the pocket I thought I was going to die! It was toasty warm and from the what it went through I figured all my stories were toast too. With much apprehension (compounded by the fact that I hadn't backed anything up), I plugged it into my computer, held my breath, and to my amazement; IT STILL WORKED!! Yay for technology! Yay for being freakin' lucky!

Right now I’m working on an erotic story about librarians. Yes, I like challenges. I feel compelled to do my part in spicing up and breaking the stereotype of the bunhead, especially the lesbian librarian. I’m not sure if a stereotype of a lesbian librarian exists. Is there one? You know, until now I’ve never even given it much thought. What exactly would a stereotypical lesbian librarian look like? Hmm, let me think. I bet she’d be either very femme or soft butch but definitely not diesel; wear comfy clothes, shoes, and secretly wear sexy lingerie underneath, as she is a breed apart from her straight sisters.

Ms. Diesel librarian would scare the shit out of the other librarians and patrons. Ok, now I don’t want to offend the extremely butch community but seriously, think about it.

Patron: "Excuse me sir, can you tell me where to find the book “How to Wear Flannel for Dummies?”"
Ms. Diesel Librarian: "Go find it yourself, asswipe."

(Long pause)

I rest my case.

A rant...just this once

OK, I'm a fairly happy person and not too much gets me upset, unless it has something to do with politics and/or religion....so I won't go there, but this last week really takes the cake. I spent all of Saturday getting yelled at by angry customers at work and topped the evening off by getting yelled at by a stupid grocery clerk who felt the need to admonish me for grabbing a pack of cigarettes on a shelf behind another counter. I thought I was saving him the hassle of getting them for me (so much for being helpful). Then on Sunday, after spending a leisurely day at an art festival, I came back only to find that some asshole keyed the passenger side of my NEW CAR from the back to the front!!!! Ugh! What possesses a person to do such an idiotic and mean thing to someone they don't even know? The irony is that my car was parked a few feet from a church which just happened to have a bunch of teenagers sitting in the back of a pickup truck when we parked the car and walked over to the festival. Hmmm....

CURVE Magazine Review

Iridescence: Sensuous Shades of Lesbian Erotica received a GREAT review from Kathi Isserman in the December 2007 issue of CURVE magazine! The review is on page 65 under PAGE TURNERS.

I know you'll think that I am biased because one of my stories is in the book, but seriously, in my humble opinion, I think that Iridescence is one of the highest quality and most beautifully written lesbian erotica books that you will find on the market these days. When I got my comp copy, I read it from cover to cover and loved ALL of the stories (Ok, so I liked mine too....). And did I mention that I am a finicky reader with an embarrassingly short attention span? If I, Ms. Finicky, enjoyed it, I think you will too.

Book Reading in West Hollywood, CA

I know I haven’t been keeping up my blog like I should, so true to my nature as a major procrastinator, I’ll put that doing that off until January 1, 2008. It’ll make a good New Year’s resolution and we’ll see how long it lasts. This gives me a month and a half to get those creative juices going until then.

For now, let’s see, in September, I did a reading in West Hollywood, CA, along with Jolie du Pre (the lovely author and wonderful editor of Iridescence: Sensuous Shades of Lesbian Erotica), Nan Andrews, Jolene Hui, and Fiona Zedde each read an excerpt of our stories from the book at A Different Light Bookstore. I was nervous as hell! I don’t know why because it was my own story that I was reading. It wasn’t like I had to give a speech or anything but getting up in front of an audience and reading about two people having steamy sex in a dressing room was something that I’d never done before. Once I started reading and had people chuckling, I had fun with the story and enjoyed myself.

Kathleen Bradean, an erotica reviewer and author, was in the audience. I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with her about the writing life. She had some nice things to say about the reading and also gave me some good advice. Afterwards we all had a delicious dinner at a Brazilian restaurant nearby. It was a wonderful experience to dine with and be in the company of the other authors. I sat across from Jolie’s sister, Lisa, and we shared a few alcohol induced giggles as well as some fun conversation.

Once we had our fill of food and drink, we walked over to The Abbey, a popular restaurant and bar. We walked through the patio and went inside. My imagination went wild when I saw several cabana-type hideaways, complete with big pillows and lovely flowing Arabic style drapes. What a sexy place to have a drink and whisper sweet nothings into a lover’s ear! Hmm…maybe in my next story my characters will have to pay a visit to one of those cabanas J

1. Why do you write erotica?

I had to really ponder this question because I had never really given it much thought. I write erotica because deep down inside I think that I shouldn’t be writing it and that is the appeal. Having been raised in an extremely conservative environment, I always played it safe and walked a straight line until I woke up from the politically correct fog. Once that happened, of course the first thing I did, true to form, was dive into a genre that those with a-stick-up-their-ass would consider to be taboo. I write erotica because it brings me such wicked pleasure, its fun, and I like being bad.

Writing erotica is truly a subtle and sensual form of seduction between the writer and the reader. As a writer, I have the opportunity to take my reader into a powerful and sensual state of mind. It is a sincere and delicious opportunity to move someone emotionally and physically. I want to take my reader by the hand, cajole her with playfulness, captivate and put her into a languorous frame of mind, then turn up the heat.

2 . What do you like best about lesbian erotica?

It’s HOT! Obviously, being a lesbian I am biased, but there is nothing more beautiful than two women making love and then being able to read about it.

3. What is the theme of your story Shopping In New York in Iridescence: Shades of Lesbian Erotica?

The story is about a cocky young Latina butch woman who, while sitting in a dressing room and waiting for a friend, has a little too much fun.

4. Name other books where we can find your work:

The Best Date Ever: True Stories that Celebrate Lesbian Relationships, edited by Linda Alvarez was published just recently. My story The Best Serial Date Ever appears in it under the pseudonym, Dylynn DeSantis.

5. Just for fun! Gym shoes or stilettos?

Just recently I started going to the gym so I’m going have to say gym shoes. I’m a comfy shoe kind of person anyway. Trotting on the treadmill in 4-1/2” heeled stilettos? …priceless… No, I don’t think so.
